Boys Varsity Tennis · Varsity Tennis Finish 4th at State


Varsity tennis competed at the 6a State Tournament Friday and Saturday. Free State tennis qualified two doubles team and a singles player. After the first day of competition the combination of Sam Six and Jack Kelsey would be eliminated after a tough loss to Lawrence High. Six and Kelsey were able to earn 2 points for the team.

Free State’s other doubles pairing of Erik Czapinski and Trey Melvin captured 2 quick wins on Friday, and were able to advance to the semifinals. Czapinski and Melvin were defeated in the semis by the eventual doubles champions from Blue Valley Northwest. Czapinski and Melvin would also go on to drop the 3rd place match. They would take home the 4th place medal, and earn the team 12 points.

Sawyer Nickel was Free State’s lone singles’ entry. Nickel would win his first match easily over Topeka before facing the 2 seed from Blue Valley West. Nickel would drop the match to the eventual singles champion from Blue Valley West. Nickel would rebound on the backside with wins over Garden City and Wichita Northwest. Nickel started Saturday with a tough loss to Olathe North, before rebounding to defeat players from Blue Valley and Olathe North. Nickel would capture a ninth place finish, and earn the team 7 points.

As a team Free State finished 4th, just 5 points shy of capturing 3rd.
