Girls Varsity Tennis · Girls Tennis Repeat as Regional Champions

The Girls Varsity Tennis program competed in the postseason Regional Tournament on Friday. This year’s tournament was hosted by Wichita East. The girls entered the day in hopes of defending last year’s 2017 Regional championship.

Keegan VanPelt led the way for the Firebirds on the singles side of the bracket. VanPelt would go 4-0 on the day, and dominate the singles competition. VanPelt ended the day with a dominate win over Manhattan to capture her first Singles Regional Championship.  VanPelt joins a rare club of Free State Singles Regional Champions. This finish qualifies VanPelt for next week’s 6a State Tournament.

Emma Johnson was the other singles entry for the Firebirds. Johnson started the day with a dominant win over Topeka High, but then would have to face VanPelt in the 2nd round. After losing to VanPelt, she would advance to the state qualifying match against Wichita East. Johnson would play a tough match against Wichita East, but ultimately dropped the match in 2 sets.

On the doubles side of the tournament, Free State would capture both the 1 seed and the 3 seed entering match play. Kate Piper and Gabby Gorman would be the 1 seed, and Anna Peard and Andie Veeder would take the 3 seed.

Piper and Gorman cruised in the first two matches of the day against Wichita Southeast and Derby. In the semis, Piper and Gorman would split the first two sets against Washburn Rural before pulling away in the 3rd set with a 6-3 win. In the championship match, Piper and Gorman would face the 2 seed from Manhattan. The Free State duo would ultimately win in straight sets, and capture the Doubles Regional Championship. This finish qualified the pair for next week’s 6a State Tournament.

Free States other doubles entry was the 3 seed of Andie Veeder and Anna Peard. Veeder and Peard would cruise in the first two rounds of the tournament. In the semis Veeder and Peard would face the 2 seed from Manhattan. The pair would ultimately drop two hard fought sets to the Indians from Manhattan. In the final match of the day, the duo would face Washburn Rural’s #1 doubles team. The girls would go on to a straight set victory, after battling in the first set, and fighting off a number of set points. Peard and Veeder would take home a 3rd place finish. This finish qualified the pair for next week’s 6a State Tournament.

As a team, Free State would take 1st place in both brackets, as well as capture 3rd in the doubles bracket. Those finishes would help Free State capture their second consecutive Regional Championship, and ultimately qualify 5 to the State Tournament.

Congratulations to all the participants!

Free State takes the court again at the State Tournament on Friday, October 14-15 at Olathe.
