The Varsity Tennis program took to the courts on Friday and Saturday to compete in the annual 6a State Tournament. Sawyer Nickel would be State’s lone singles entrant, and Trey Melvin and Davis Steadman would be Free State’s doubles entrant.
On day 1, Nickel would capture wins over Washburn Rural and Hutch. In the quarters, Nickel would face Seaton from Olathe West, and drop a tightly contested match. On day 2, Nickel would rebound on the backside of the bracket, and go on to capture a win over SMW, before dropping a match to SME. Nickel would play in the 7th place match, and capture a win over Eason of SME, and tally 9 team points for Free State.
On the doubles side of the bracket, Melvin and Steadman would start day 1 off with a win over Dodge City. They would go on to face the overall #1 seed of the tournament from BVNW, and eventual State Champions. Melvin and Steadman would drop the first set 0-6, before rebounding in the 2nd set with a 6-3 win. The match would go to a super tiebreaker, where State would drop it 6-10. This tough loss would put Steadman and Melvin in two consecutive elimination matches. Melvin and Steadman would first eliminate Washburn Rural’s #2s with a 9-3 win. The duo would go on to finish day 1 out with a 9-5 win over Washburn Rural’s #1s. These two consecutive wins would ensure the duo a spot for day 2 of the tournament.
On day 2, Melvin and Steadman would start the day off with a solid 9-5 win over a Manhattan team that they had lost to earlier in the season. After the win over Manhattan, the duo would drop a pair of matches to Olathe West, and Mill Valley. Overall, Melvin and Steadman would capture 8th place in the doubles bracket, and tally 8 points overall for the team.
As a team Free State would finish 6th overall. Congratulations to these three Seniors.
