Free State tennis took to the courts at the annual 6a State Tournament. Free State took 3 players, 1 doubles team of Taylor Veeder and Anna Peard. On the singles side, Free State would be represented by Keegan VanPelt.
The doubles pair of Veeder and Peard would drop a tight match to Topeka High 3-6, 4-6. On the backside of the bracket, the doubles pair would face Washburn Rural, and go on to drop that match 3-9. Congratulations on a great season ladies.
On the singles side, Keegan VanPelt would look to improve on her 5th place and All-State finish from 2018. VanPelt would start the tournament off with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Olathe South. VanPelt would follow that win up with wins over Manhattan and Blue Valley West to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinal match, VanPelt would face Flanagan from Blue Valley North. VanPelt battled through the first set with a 6-4 win, she would drop the a tight second set 3-6, and then drop the last set 1-6. This loss dropped her to the 3rd place match against the previously undefeated Harkin from Manhattan. VanPelt would struggle getting her footing during the match, and ultimately dropped it 0-6, 3-6.
VanPelt would end the year with a 27-7 record, and with her 4th place finish, she would capture the 5th highest individual finish in school history.
As a team Free State finished 7th overall.
