On Saturday afternoon the Free State tennis team competed at the Regional Tournament at Gardner-Edgerton. On the singles side Free State would be represented by Keegan VanPelt and Thayu Kimori. Kimori would drop her first match to Olathe South, and be eliminated from the tournament. VanPelt was the 3 seed in the singles bracket and would coast in her first two matches against BVH and BVNW. VanPelt had to default the next two matches as a result of an injury. However, with her first two wins she has qualified for this week’s state tournament.
On the doubles side Maya Lee and Dayna Steadman would start the day off with a dominate win over BVW. In their second round they would face BVN, and although the games were tight, they would drop that match, and be eliminated from the tournament. The other doubles entrant of Emma Evans and Olivia Evans had a tough opening round opponent but played tough and consistent throughout the match. They ultimately dropped the match 3-6, 3-6.
Congratulations to all the ladies who competed at Regionals and throughout the season.
VanPelt will compete this Friday afternoon at CBAC in the 6a State Tournament. VanPelt will be attempting to improve on last year’s 4th place finish.
